FDA-Registered vs FDA-Approved: The Difference Explained

"FDA-registered" and "FDA-approved" sound similar, but they mean very different things. Confusing the two is a common consumer trap.

FDA-Approved

"FDA-approved" is a specific legal term. It means the FDA has reviewed a product and determined it meets safety and efficacy standards for a specific medical use. This applies to drugs and medical devices — not dietary supplements.

Getting FDA approval for a drug takes years, costs hundreds of millions of dollars, and requires large-scale clinical trials.

FDA-Registered

"FDA-registered" refers to the facility, not the product. Manufacturers of food and dietary supplements in the US are required to register their facilities with the FDA. Registration means the facility exists, has been reported to the FDA, and is subject to FDA inspection.

Registration is a regulatory requirement, not a quality guarantee.

Why Dietary Supplements Can't Be FDA-Approved

Under US law (the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994), dietary supplements are regulated as a category of food — not drugs. The FDA does not approve supplements for safety or efficacy before they go to market. Manufacturers are responsible for the safety of their products.

What This Means in Practice

When a supplement label says "manufactured in an FDA-registered facility":

• ✓ The facility is registered with the FDA
• ✓ The facility is subject to FDA inspection
• ✗ The product itself is not FDA-approved
• ✗ The FDA has not evaluated efficacy claims

The Legal Disclaimer

Every US supplement is legally required to display: "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease." This isn't a red flag — it's the standard disclosure applied to all dietary supplements.

What to Look For Instead

• Country of manufacture clearly stated
• Real refund policy
• Verifiable contact information
